The name of the pattern “Ma’Ndebeble” is composed of the prefix and term “Ma’,” meaning mother nature, maternal guardian, or figure. This pattern is also a reference to the fact that many of the patterns designed and painted by the Ndebele tribe were created and done by elderly women, often mothers and grandmothers, and this was their assumed role. We have taken the term “Ma’” and used it to honor and celebrate this tribe but also the women in the past who have paved a way by passing down this style of design to the present generation as well as inspired future generations.

This pattern takes inspiration from this tribe but also seeks to present this style of design in a new and contemporary way by focusing on the fundamental shapes used. The simple shape forms become a design language that represents community and unity, while the colors applied are used to denote joy and a sense of optimism, thus painting Africa as a colorful continent, one of joy, showcasing a new, contemporary design with a contemporary color pallet.

Unique lovable design - gentle on the feet

Love the design of the socks they design - truly unique pieces that catch the eye with the bright color usage. Soft and gentle on the feet because of the Bamboo, and they continue to look good after washing. Would recommend!

Our socks are made from bamboo fiber. Bamboo has great qualities for socks since its fiber is naturally antibacterial, hypoallergenic, thermo-regulating (even when you sweat—you don't need to tell us!), and will keep away moisture, ensuring your feet stay fresh and dry.

Not to mention, bamboo is also an incredibly renewable and versatile crop that requires very little water and doesn’t need to be sprayed with pesticides or fertilizers to grow. Plus, bamboo releases 35% more oxygen into the air compared to trees of the same size.

We work with local, booming designers from or with a strong link to the African continent. They all share two things in common: They are proud of their heritage, culture, and identity and want to tell a story of kinship, laughter, and heroism.

All our socks are made in Africa. Only by showing that Africa can produce high-quality goods, keep as much wealth, and create jobs in the continent, will Africa be able to prosper.

We donate 10% of our profits to local initiatives who strengthen communities through design, culture, and art. The charity we work with is called “Lalela,” and it is leading art workshops with children and youth from local communities around South Africa, enabling them to ignite their imaginations and manifest their dreams.
